Assigning, Delegating, Supervising, and Prioritizing Care
The three mentioned are crucial management and leadership skills that the nurse should possess to have a smooth learning of their service delivery. For instance, assigning is the process of designating responsibilities and tasks to the staff regarding their roles according to the scope of practice, and based on their responsibilities. Delegating is the act of transferring the responsibility for a specific task from one person to another while taking ownership of the results. Supervising is giving directions on how a task is to be done while monitoring and evaluating the performance of other nursing staff. Lastly, prioritizing care involves coming up with an order in which the patient’s needs should be addressed. Mostly based on the severity of their symptoms and the urgency of the intervention to prevent a poor prognosis (Ernstmeyer & Christman, 2022).
All the above management skills are applicable in the case presented above. The registered nurse in this scenario happens to be the leader and has the mandate to competently exercise these activities of leadership. To begin with the assigning, the registered nurse (RN) should assign the LPN to the patients who require minimal clinical expertise since they fit into the LPN’s scope of practice. Therefore, client numbers 1, 5, and 6 should be assigned to the LPN. On the delegation of care, the LPN and the CNA can comfortably be left to continuously monitor the client’s vitals, go for the lab reports of the clients, and do thorough patient teaching as they process their discharge. The RN remains ready to be consulted in case of any concern. Supervision of interventions such as wound dressing for client 2, pain assessment for client 3, and patient teaching on medication adherence during discharge for client 6 is paramount (Ernstmeyer & Christman, 2021).
The priority of care is determined by the severity of the outcomes that may emanate from the unattended needs (Ernstmeyer & Christman, 2022a). In regard to this, the order of the clients and care from the highest to the lowest is as follows: client 4, client 3, client 2, client 1, client 5, and client 6.
