Discussion – Nurse Leader and Manager Decisions

Guided by the DECIDE model, a nurse leader may be involved in the decision-making process in various ways. The DECIDE model entails stating the problem, creating the criteria, taking into consideration all the alternatives, choosing the best alternative, creating and applying a plan of action, and monitoring and evaluating the feedback and solution when needed. During problem definition, as a nurse leader, I would identify barriers that block achieving team goals (Guo, 2020). Establishing the criteria involves the nurse leader putting up measures used to get solutions that best address the purpose. The next step involves the nurse leader considering all the alternatives through increasing team building and communication (Guo, 2020). Identification of the best practice consists of the nurse leader using their knowledge and experience to choose the best solution for the team to use. A nurse leader’s organizational and communication skills are key in the development and implementation of an action plan. Lastly, the nurse leader evaluates and monitors the solution to prevent, reduce, and overcome all probable adverse consequences (Guo, 2020).

A clinical situation I have encountered is that of a 45-year-old male patient with a history of depression and severe anxiety who was admitted to the psychiatric unit after a failed suicide. The patient had aggressive behavior towards other patients and staff, creating a challenging environment. Using the DECIDE model, I first defined whether the patient’s violent behavior posed a safety risk to others or himself and the need to address the behavior. Secondly, I came up with a criterion that ensured staff and patient safety, offered a therapeutic patient environment, reduced the use of physical restraints, and upheld patients’ rights and dignity. Also, I considered alternatives, such as increasing the observation level of patients and designating other staff for supervision, using medication, or transferring the patient to a higher level of care.

In the next step of the decision-making process, I identified that the best alternative was to administer medication to sedate the patient. After picking the best alternative, I prepared the medication and administered it intravenously. In the last step, the patient was monitored to see if he was relaxed and calm after sedative administration.
