Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures distributed throughout the body, acting as filters for foreign particles and cancer cells.

Moreover, lymph nodes are involved in many other organ systems. For example, they are integral to the cardiovascular system by maintaining fluid balance. They absorb excess interstitial fluid and return it to the bloodstream, preventing edema (Lewis et al., 2019). In the digestive system, lymph nodes in the intestines, known as Peyer’s patches, monitor intestinal bacteria populations and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
Role in Adaptive Immunity
The role of lymph nodes in the immune system is paramount. They facilitate the activation of the adaptive immune response, where lymphocytes produce antibodies targeting specific pathogens. This adaptive immunity is crucial for long-term protection against diseases. Furthermore, lymph nodes interact closely with the respiratory system, filtering out pathogens that enter through the airways, thus protecting the lungs from infections (Lewis et al., 2019).
